October 12th, 2013 - The opening leg of the inaugural Sooner Showdown was held on Thursday night at Salina Highbanks Speedway (Pryor Creek, Oklahoma) as 45 competitors took to the wicked fast oval.

It would prove to be a frustrating night for Hughes though as he started the evening before qualifying 2nd fastest in his group before issues in heat race and b-main action prevented him from earning a starting spot in the 20 lap, preliminary feature. As a result he will try again on Friday night to earn a starting spot in the $10,000-to-win finale on Saturday evening.

Jason enjoyed a much better outing on Friday night in the second night of the Sooner Showdown as he swept the program by first setting fast time in his group before winning his heat race to earn the pole position for the feature. Hughes started on the front row for the finale alongside John Allen. Allen jumped to the lead at the drop of the green flag and held the top spot until lap 7 when Hughes rocketed past. Once out front Jason never looked back on his way to the victory. He was followed across the finish line by Kelly Shryock, Terry Phillips, Steve Whiteaker Jr., and Bryan Rowland. His performance locks him into the 2nd starting spot for Saturday night's finale.

On Saturday evening the $10,000 finale was held, and Hughes rolled off the grid from the middle of the front row. As the finale went green he snagged the lead and paced the first seven circuits before Ryan Gustin raced past for the lead. Over the next several laps Hughes began to fade through the field with handling issues before ultimately retiring on lap 38 to a 27th place finish.

Forty-three entries took part in the preliminary program, and after advancing to a 4th place finish from the 6th starting spot Jason locked into the 14th starting spot for the 20 lap feature. The main event found Jason advancing eleven spots on his way to a 3rd place finish with Jeremy Payne scoring the win over Terry Phillips. Hughes ended the night fourth highest in the points to lock into Saturday night's $10,000-to-win finale.

Via his preliminary night performance Jason earned the 11th starting spot for the 50 lap, $10,000-to-win feature on Saturday evening.
